Following the travel chaos caused by the strikes and ash clouds that blighted 2010, Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (ATOL) is being reformed, with a new flight-plus element being introduced. The Department of Transport is set to unveil details of the changes in the next week, which will cover separate sales of a flight and accommodation.
It seems the changes to ATOL will offer more protection for consumers. The new proposals would mean that those companies who sell DIY holidays will have to hold an ATOL licence for the first time, increasing the protection available for consumers in the event of an airline failure. This would make companies responsible for rebooking or refunding clients if an airline failed.
The proposals are currently awaiting clearance by the Cabinet after being formally signed off by the Transport Secretary in December.
