Cascais on a summer’s day, near Lisbon in Portugal.

Located just 29km from the city centre, the town of Cascais is a very popular choice indeed for beach lovers visiting the western coast. Fishing village turned summer resort Cascais has an upmarket yet cosmopolitan atmosphere whilst retaining its roots. The historic town centre contains some wonderful examples of architecture while the number of museums such as the Museum of the Sea and the likes of the gorgeous Palace of Conde de Castro Guimarães, home to a staggering collection of more than 25,000 books, offer some alternative attractions to enjoy during your time here. The beaches of course are the town’s crowning glory, combining wide, golden sands with calm and inviting turquoise waters, it’s truly an idyllic choice. Nearby, Guincho beach is famous for its powerful waves making it a key destination for surfers. When a town has so much going for it, it’s not surprising to learn that the area does get exceptionally busy during the summer so do bear this in mind.

Located just south of the Tagus River, Almada is the closest and easiest to reach of the resorts in the area. It’s also one of the best places from which to enjoy views of Lisbon, either from one of the many sandy beaches or perhaps from the green of one of the three golf courses located here. Fonte da Telha beach is a great choice if you are after some sun, sea, sand and relaxation. Overall, the district of Almada as a whole is ideal for a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon!

The attractive resort town of Estoril.

Another attractive resort town is that of Estoril, which you can actually reach by foot by walking along the beach front esplanade from Cascais; a journey which would take around 35 minutes. It’s well worth visiting this way as the route will lead you past many beach front bars and restaurants. Estoril is home to high quality hotels and top notch restaurants with golf courses and beautiful beaches aplenty, as well as boat trips and more to fill your time. When evening rolls around, the casino is the place to go combining gambling with a great cabaret show! It also makes a great base from which to visit Sintra and its stunning UNESCO listed Regaleira Palace and Gardens. Do bear in mind that whilst a day or two may be fine for younger children or party lovers, Estoril is a more relaxed destination. Should you choose to visit Estoril direct from Lisbon, it’s a short 24km drive from the city centre.

A rugged but beautiful beach in Ericeira.

Ericeira is a 40 minute journey north of Lisbon but it’s still within very easy reach either as a day trip from the city or for a short stop over. A stunning fishing and surfing village, it’s actually regarded as one of the prime surfing destinations in Europe. Enjoy views of the powerful Atlantic juxtaposed with the cobbled, winding streets in the village centre and take a walk along one of the beautiful beaches!

Libon has a lot to offer, nevertheless. Great views, beautiful old architecture and those old yellow trams. And the beaches, of course! I’m probably going to put it on my next possible target destinations list.
