The Costa Alentejana has plenty to offer whatever your reason for travelling with lots of authentic rural hospitality. Driving from Lisbon to Faro can occupy a few hours but prolong the trip with stops at the highlights below.<\/p>\n<p><em>Top tip: Even wandering through narrow streets can have pleasant surprises. Facing west onto the Atlantic means you\u2019ll be treated to some amazing sunsets. If you\u2019re a fan of water sports, the large swells can be taken advantage of. Travelling in peak season means there\u2019ll be extra tourists and overinflated prices. We\u2019d recommend you take the trip in May, June, July or September to maximise weather conditions while avoiding the tourist effect. It\u2019s also worth bearing in mind that the route is unsheltered coastline so it can be rough and windy!<\/p>\n<h2>What to eat and drink<\/h2>\n<p>Being this close to the coast you\u2019ll want to try as many fresh traditional seafood dishes as possible. <em>Bacalhau <\/em>(codfish) and <em>porco <\/em>(pork) dishes are exceptionally good here, best served with a locally produced wine. <em>Vinho verdes<\/em> is popular- a young wine which is consumed within a year of bottling.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to splash out, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-and.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L\u2019AND Vineyards<\/a> in Montemor-o-Novo. Some suites come with retractable ceilings. Fill your belly with Michelin star cuisine then sleep under a star-filled sky. For an alternative vineyard that includes horse riding, there\u2019s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herdade-dos-grous.com\/en\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herdade dos Grous<\/a> further inland if you\u2019re exploring more of Portugal.<\/p>\n<h2>What to see<\/h2>\n<h3>From Lisbon<\/h3>\n<p>Spend a day or two basing yourself in Lisbon, stretching out in each direction to immerse yourself in the city\u2019s closest offerings. Roam the narrow streets, soaking up the vibe. <a href=\"http:\/\/castelodesaojorge.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge<\/a> is worth exploring, along with some <a href=\"\/blog\/2016\/11\/24\/archaeological-sites-lisbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other archaeological sites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Head east to Sintra, following <a href=\"\/blog\/2014\/08\/14\/scenic-drive-sintra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this scenic drive<\/a>, and discover the Pena National Palace.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also Bel\u00e9m\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mosteirojeronimos.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torrebelem.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bel\u00e9m Tower<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/ccm.marinha.pt\/pt\/museu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maritime Museum<\/a>. For a stunning view, you should climb the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.padraodosdescobrimentos.pt\/en\/plan-your-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monument to the Discoveries<\/a> (<em>Padr\u00e3o do Descobrimentos<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>From Lisbon, traverse the <em>Ponte 25 de April<\/em> bridge across the Tagus River (<em>Rio Tejo<\/em>) and towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitportugal.com\/en\/NR\/exeres\/B1508929-5EDF-4187-B8B8-9349F1C48485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parque Natural da Arr\u00e1bida<\/a>. Located between Sesimbra and Set\u00fabal, this protected area is worth a few hours to check out the 17th century fort and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sesimbraportugal.net\/arrabida\/Museu-Oceanografico-Arrabida-Fort.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oceanographic Museum located inside<\/a>. Parking is however limited. Arrive as early as possible in the summer to ensure a space. Continuing past the fort will take you to the <em>Praia do Portinho da Arr\u00e1bida<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19756\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zestcarrental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Portugal-Belem-Tower-Stock-PUNTO-STUDIO-FOTO-AG-min-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Belem Tower, Lisbon, Portugal\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zestcarrental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Portugal-Belem-Tower-Stock-PUNTO-STUDIO-FOTO-AG-min-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.zestcarrental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Portugal-Belem-Tower-Stock-PUNTO-STUDIO-FOTO-AG-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zestcarrental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Portugal-Belem-Tower-Stock-PUNTO-STUDIO-FOTO-AG-min-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Comporta and Porto Covo<\/h3>\n<p>Take the N253 to Comporta on the other side of the Tr\u00f3ia peninsula for quiet and wild beaches. The N261 onto the N26-1 will take you to Porto Covo. A parish of pretty blue, red and white houses, peppered with family-run traditional restaurants. Great for inexpensive food. For surfing, the best spot is at <em>Praia de S\u00e3o Torpes<\/em>. The small fishing village of Porto Covo itself and the road south will give you a great view of Pessegueiro Island. If you wish, you can take a boat to the island to explore the 17th century fortress and 15th century chapel there.<\/p>\n<h3>Odeceixe<\/h3>\n<p>Nestled in a quiet river valley, the blue flag beach here is one of the largest in Portugal, <em>Praia de Odeceixe<\/em>. It\u2019s also one of the most sheltered. Verdant cliffs provide a stunning backdrop for a few hours relaxing on the fine sand. It has one of the few naturist beaches in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>For those who prefer being active to tanning on the beach, there are routes to hike in the natural park which will leave you mesmerised by the scenery.<\/p>\n<p><em>Top tip for hiking: the stretch of coastline between Santiago do Cac\u00e9m and Cabo de S. Vicente is connected by a cycling\/hiking trial called the Historical Way. There are other routes as well, including circular routes. Alternatively, relax in the evening watching the sun set with a drink, listening to the lapping waves on the shore.
