Which motorways are affected?<\/h3>\n

The recent changes affect several key motorways across the country, and with so many Zest customers travelling to the Algarve<\/a>, you’ll be pleased to hear that the A22 – the region’s main motorway – is one of them! In addition to the A22, other affected motorways include the A4, A13, A23, A24, A25 and A28.<\/p>\n

Do I still need a toll transponder?<\/h3>\n

If you’re solely travelling the roads listed above then the simple answer is no. But you may be surprised to hear that despite the recent changes, many travellers still choose to opt in for a toll transponder when renting a car in Portugal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are still several major roads where tolls remain in place, and if your trip takes you beyond the toll-free routes, or on roads where you may be unsure if payments are required, having a toll transponder ready will help mitigate any cautionary worry or unexpected fines<\/a>. This is especially true for anyone planning on leaving the Algarve and taking the A2 towards Lisbon, as that motorway is still tolled. On top of this, many travellers also find transponders handy to pay for parking in designated car parks.<\/p>\n

Toll deposits<\/h3>\n

Many car rental providers in Portugal require a deposit for toll use, regardless of whether you plan to drive on toll roads. While this may seem unnecessary if you intend to stick to toll-free routes, it is a standard precaution to cover any potential toll charges during your rental period.<\/p>\n

Even if you stay within the Algarve (where there are no toll roads aside from the A2) a deposit may still apply, as roads that lead out of the region can be tolled. Rest assured, if no tolls are incurred then the deposit will be refunded after your rental.
