There\u2019s more to Ireland than the Ring of Kerry, the Guinness Storehouse and the Blarney Stone. That\u2019s why I decided to put the spotlight on 5 secret beauty spots in Ireland. Read on and we will showcase a different side of the country that few people ever experience…<\/p>\n

Cavan Lakes<\/h2>\n

Located 100km north-west of Dublin and hugging the border of Northern Ireland, County Cavan<\/a> is best known for its many lakes. In fact, the saying goes that there is a different lake for each day of the year. Few tourists ever venture here, which makes this a natural, unspoilt haven. Enjoy excellent walking paths and even better fishing! On holiday, you are unlikely to have any equipment with you. There are however a number of companies from which you can arrange to rent the necessary bits and pieces. If fishing doesn\u2019t float your boat, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the area. Why not hire a canoe or kayak? You could explore the area by foot as there are some great walking paths around this natural wonderland.<\/p>\n

Waterford<\/h2>\n

If you venture outside of Dublin, most people choose the medieval city of Kilkenny. Forget about Kilkenny and start planning your visit to the city of Waterford! This small city with a friendly atmosphere is located on the River Suir in the south east. It is brimming with medieval history; in fact it\u2019s the oldest city in Ireland. Highlights of a trip to this gem include Reginald\u2019s Tower<\/a> on the Quay and a visit to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity<\/a>. Learn plenty at the Treasures of Medieval Waterford Museum<\/a> and arrange a tour of Waterford Crystal<\/a> to learn more about the production process. After plenty of sightseeing, why not stop for a bite to eat in one of the independent restaurants or have a drink in a quaint Irish pub. Following this, make sure that you enjoy a walk along one of the local blue flag beaches.<\/p>\n

Charleville Castle<\/h2>\n

The Irish countryside is filled with castles, the most famous of which is Blarney Castle<\/a>, home to the Blarney Stone. A far less visited, but impressive example is Charleville Castle<\/a> found in the midst of the country amid oak woodland. Built in Gothic style, it is steeped in history and dates back to 1800-1809. Many believe it to be haunted, so it has appeared on TV a few times! The castle stood empty for many years but has since been restored and is now open to the public for tours. As an alternative, consider a trip to Bunratty Castle<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n

Comeragh Mountains<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t get your hopes up; the Comeragh Mountains aren\u2019t as majestic as those found in mainland Europe. They are still an area of outstanding natural beauty however. The best part is that hardly anyone visits them, so you are free to soak up this stunning area. You will be only be joined by serious mountain climbers as the area is rather tranquil. Uncover hidden waterfalls, still lakes, craggy hill tops and breathtaking views. Often labelled Ireland\u2019s answer to the Peak District this area is definitely one of many secret beauty spots in Ireland.<\/p>\n

Bettystown & Laytown<\/h2>\n

The two tiny villages of Bettystown and Laytown are usually only visited by those on domestic holidays; rarely do the streets welcome international visitors. It is located on the coast, just a short 40 minute drive north of Dublin. Take a glimpse of traditional village life by the sea where the beaches are lovely and the championship golf course boasts a challenging game in gorgeous surroundings. These beautiful villages are fantastic for a wander and a bite to eat, off the beaten tourist track.<\/p>\n
