Namibia's capital city Windhoek lies just a 40 minute drive from the airport and the journey is easily completed when you collect a hire car. Explore the beautiful surroundings at your own pace and really get to know the country.
Sightseeing in Windhoek
Windhoek is home to a modern pedestrian-friendly city centre with attractive high rise steel and glass buildings. This is complimented by neo-baroque cathedrals and, seemingly misplaced but not unappreciated, German castles. The African urban buzz gives the city an edge that isn’t found anywhere else in Namibia.
Pack a picnic and head to Zoo Park. Although the park stopped functioning as a zoo in the 1960s, the picturesque grounds act as a shady retreat from the heat of the afternoon sun. Thousands of years ago the park was the site of a prehistoric elephant hunt. The remains of two elephants and a number of quartz tools have been found on the grounds over the years, and the historical origins are honoured in the park’s prominent elephant column.
Exploring Namibia's Top Attractions
Plan a trip to the fantastic Etosha National Park in the north of the country. The journey is quite long, but will be so worth it for the unbeatable game viewing you can experience here, regarded as some of the best in the world.
The Skeleton Coast Park is another venture that is not to be missed during your time in Namibia. Hire a car and explore this beautiful desolate land that has been the cause for many shipwrecks in the past, although the wrecks now make great homes for cape fur seals.
For a different taste during your time in Windhoek, why not visit the Windhoek Country Club and hit the casino for an hour or two? Alternaitvely relax and play a few rounds on the golf green.
