Floating off the southern coast of Australia, Tasmania is often forgotten in favour of the mainland. What many people don’t realise is that Tasmania is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Untouched beauty and petite but perfect cities work in harmony to create a truly fantastic holiday destination. Temperatures are pleasant without reaching the scorching climbs of the mainland. It’s small enough to explore in a week or two with a hire car from Hobart. If you still need some persuasion, here is our Tasmania top 10.

Freycinet Peninsula

Jutting out into the ocean of the east coast of the island, the beautiful Freycinet Pensisula National Park is rough and rugged. Surrounded by stunning mountains, you can go kayaking in Wineglass Bay, bask on endless sandy beaches, go wildlife and bird watching and walk among forests and heathlands.

Cataract Gorge

One of the island’s most popular recreational attractions, Cataract Gorge is the found at the lower portion of South Esk River just on the outskirts of central Launceston. It’s a mere two-mile drive from the city centre. Test yourself with abseiling and rock climbing, have a go at hang gliding, go walking in the bushland or take a dip in the swimming pool and watch the wallabies at dusk.

Port Arthur

Port Arthur is one of Australia’s most important open air museums and heritage sites. In operation between 1830 and 1877, it quickly became Australia’s largest convict settlement. Today you can tour the penitentiary, the ruins of the church and the model prison. The peninsula on which it was built adds to the appeal of a visit.

Bruny Island Cruises

Bruny Islands sit just off the southern coast of Tasmania. They are best visited on board a boat cruise. See a great range of wildlife including seals, dolphins, whales, seabirds and eagles and tour the impressive coastline and sea cliffs of the island.

Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park

No trip here is complete without meeting a Tasmanian Devil, surely a highlight of the Tasmania top 10. There is no better place than the Tasmanian Devil Park. They might look cute, but they certainly have a devilish side. There are feeding sessions 6 times a day. You can also meet a range of other wildlife including kangaroos (which you can hand feed!) wallabies and a selection of birds.

Salamanca Market

A favourite among locals and visitors alike, the Salamanca Market in Hobart is not to be missed. The beautiful waterfront truly comes alive with the hustle and bustle of the Saturday market. Top up on colourful fruits and vegetables and peruse everything from arts, crafts and clothes to music and books. Generally enjoy the atmosphere of one of Australia’s best known outdoor markets.

Golf – Tasmania top 10

Whether you are a newbie or seasoned professional, golfing in Tasmania is an enjoyable past time. There are more than 80 golf courses to choose from. Found in spectacular settings, you’ll be warmly welcomed at whichever course you select. Every course proves to be both challenging but enjoyable. Some of the more popular choices include Ulverstone and Kingston Beach.

Tahune Forest Airwalk

Found within the South West Wilderness National Park, the Tahune Forest Airway offers a rare opportunity to experience the forest from above. The Tahune Forest Walk winds its way through the leaves at a height of 48m above the ground, with swinging bridges and wondrous views.

The Museum of Old and New Art

Attracting thousands of visitors every month, the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart is undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions in the Tasmania top 10. Opened in 2011 and boasting unique exhibits, this world-class art museum is reason enough to consider a visit to Tasmania.
