Did you know that the DVLA has recently changed the process of obtaining International Driving Permits? As of April 1st 2024, drivers can no longer purchase an International Driving Permit from their local Post Office branches and will instead need to visit a participating PayPoint location. There are thousands of PayPoint locations across the country and you will often find them in your local newsagents and petrol stations.

What is an International Driving Permit?

International Driving Permits are used in conjunction with your driving licence when driving outside of the UK both in your own vehicle or a hire. These permits provide a translated format of your driving licence that is recognised in many countries across the world and can help when dealing with agents at hire desks or with local authorities.

Will I need an IDP for my trip?

The requirements differ from country to country and can also depend on the length of your stay. Fortunately for those looking to holiday within Europe, most of the popular destinations in the European Union do not require you to have an IDP (for example Portugal, Spain and Italy), but if your plans are to go further afield the more likely an IDP will be mandatory.

But regardless of where you decide to travel to, we always recommend that you check your destinations requirements if you plan to drive abroad.

If you hold an International Driving Licence, you will need to check your country’s agreement on driving in your destination country.

How can I apply for an IDP?

To apply for an IDP simply bring your full UK driving licence, a passport standard photograph, and the £5.50 application fee to any PayPoint location. If you are applying with an older paper version licence, you will also need to present your valid passport.

Does this affect my existing IDP?

No need to panic! IDP applications made prior to the process change are still valid until their expiry date. Depending on the type of IDP you have, your IDP could be valid from 1 to 3 years.
