THRIFTY HERTZ ALMA GREECE ALAMO AUTOUNION

The Greek Island of Chios is situated just 7km off the coast of Turkey. The island is always a popular holiday destination and there are many things to see and do.

Chios Town

The main settlement on the island is Chios Town, located centrally on the east coast. The town is a perfect place to base yourself for a trip here as all attractions are, at most, 45 minutes’ drive away.

Within the town there are a lot of things to keep you entertained. You can browse the stalls at the Aplotaria Market and try to grab a bargain. Alternatively, you can stroll round the Municipal Park before heading to Vounakio Square for a refreshing drink.

However, if you are a lover of history you must visit the Castle, which houses the tomb of Kara Ali, the Ottoman admiral who was responsible for the Massacre at Chios. You can also visit the Byzantine Museum, where you can see Delacroix’s famous painting of the massacre.

Nea Moni

This 11th Century monastery is located in the middle of the island and is a great place to visit for everyone. There are some incredible mosaics in this UNESCO listed building, but none are as impressive as the interior of the dome. Visitors can also enjoy the attached museum which displays historical artefacts from the site.

Anavatos

In the south of the island you can find the ruined village of Anavatos. Visiting the old Byzantine village is like taking a step back in time and can give you some real perspective as to the consequences of the Massacre of Chios. The nearby town of Avgogyma is a good place to visit after your trip to the ruins. Here you can relax in the shade whilst you have a refreshing drink in the main square.

Volissos

In the quieter north of the island you will find the village of Volissos. This charming village is a great place to spend an afternoon. The village is overlooked by a castle which is its most popular attraction. A walk to the top of the hill will not only reward you with a better view of the castle but also with great views over the whole island. Volissos has a natural harbour and a brilliant beach.

Kampos

Located on the east of the island, this is a wonderful place to visit. The valley is rich with orchards, small winding roads and large brilliant houses. The relaxing atmosphere in this area makes it a great place to come if you are looking to unwind. There are various mansions that can be visited, although some are in ruins. Don’t let this deter you though because a visit here is definitely worthwhile.
