We all discover that the world is full of weird and wonderful things during our travels and restaurants are no different. There are all manner of extraordinary eateries around the globe. From the Toilet Restaurant in Taiwan to Disaster Café in Spain and everything in-between. A meal in one of these places would definitely make for an interesting story to say the least! Bon Appetit!

1. Toilet Restaurant, Taiwan

The thought of eating from a toilet would probably make you feel sick right? Well, apparently this is not the case in Taiwan. There are a whole chain of toilet restaurants here which prove to be really popular. The bathroom theme is signature. Tables are made from bath tubs, and you perch on toilets to eat your meal instead of chairs. It doesn’t stop there though. Meals are served in miniature toilets, drinks are served in tiny urinals and toilet roll replaces napkins. Don’t forget the chocolate flavoured desserts which resemble faeces.

2. Death Themed Restaurant, Ukraine

A meal in the death-themed restaurant, Eternity, in Ukraine will make for a very melancholic affair. It is built within a giant coffin. The interior follows suit on the death theme, with normal sized coffin and flowered wreaths littered and of course funeral music to serenade you whilst you eat.

3. Dinner in the Sky, UK

Fancy your meal with a view? Not a problem with Dinner in the Sky, although this is definitely one to avoid if you have a fear of heights. Essentially, the restaurant consists of a specially designed table and chairs which can accommodate up to 22 people and is suspended 50 metres in the air by a crane. The experience costs around £10,000 and the crane can be hired for use anywhere in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Although it is available is over 35 countries! Diners are strapped in by seatbelts before they take to the sky to enjoy their meal.

4. Dans le Noir, UK

Dinner in the dark is becoming an increasingly popular concept around the world. Dans le Noir is our version here in the UK. Prepare for a sensory overload with dinner in pitch black. Sounds like a strange concept, but when you take away the sense of sight, the sense of smell and taste are heightened. This makes for an unbeatable culinary experience. You won’t be able to make a judgement before you try any of the meals as you won’t be able to see them! Begin your evening with a drink in a brightly lit room, before being guided to the Dark Room by the staff members who are blind. In a bizarre exchange of roles, the staff members will become your eyes for the evening. We are sure you are wondering if the dark room really is pitch black; if so how do you see the menus? We had loads of questions too, check out their website!

5. Hospitalis Restaurant, Latvia

Think of a hospital and good food most definitely doesn’t come to mind. It is therefore strange to find a medical themed restaurant in Riga, Latvia which goes by the name of Hospitalis. Waitresses adorn nurse and doctor uniforms and food is served in operating room dishes and drinks come in scientific flasks. To really embrace the experience, diners can become a “patient” and even be hand fed by the waitresses whilst strapped up in a strait jacket. The whole thing sounds exceedingly bizarre to us!

6. Fortezza Medicea Restaurant, Italy

This restaurant proves to be emphatically popular despite the fact that you are essentially dining in the slammer. Tables are booked up weeks in advance for a restaurant which is located inside a top security prison in Italy. You are served by convicts, whether they are murderers, members of the Mafia or robbers. It is found on the outskirts of Pisa, within a deconsecrated chapel, set behind the 60 ft-high walls and is complete with watch towers, searchlights and security cameras. Admittance is only permitted if you pass the strict security checks.

7. Ithaa Restaurant, Maldives

Moving away from the very weird and onto the wonderful, the Ithaa Restaurant is one we’d love to secure a reservation at. Found under the sea in the Maldives, the Ithaa Restaurant delivers and unsurpassable dining experience. Its secured 5 metres under the waves, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef so you can enjoy the sea life whilst you become the exhibit in this underwater aquarium!

8. Graveyard Restaurant, India

A meal here will make for a very morbid experience! Why? The New Lucky Restaurant in Ahmadabad is littered with graves as it is built directly on top of a century old Muslim cemetery. The restaurant owner is convinced that it brings good luck to the restaurant which has been in business for around four decades! Each standing at about shin height, the graves are painted green in colour and a member of staff places a singular dried flower atop them each day.

9. Hobbit House, Philippines

Hobbit House in the Philippines was founded by former Peace Corps volunteer and college professor Jim Turner, who was so inspired by J.R.R Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” books that he founded a bar called Hobbit House, staffed entirely by “little people.” (His words, not ours!) It was opened back in 1973, long before the film surfaced and has been a roaring success ever since. There are over 150 kinds of beer available from around the world and since moving premises in 2007, the interior décor features paintings of scenes from the trilogy.

10. Vampire Café, Tokyo

The Vampire Café is a gothic themed restaurant found in Tokyo, where the waitresses dress as French Maids with a dark twist. The décor is authentic enough to fool you into thinking that you’ve entered the set of a horror movie thanks to the selection of skulls, crucifixes, candelabras, spooky spiders and Dracula’s coffin. Luckily blood isn’t on the menu, but the names of dishes have very exotic names.

11. Disaster Café, Spain

We round our list off with the Disaster Café in Lloret de Mar, Spain whereby diners feel the full force of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake during each and every meal! It’s just a simulation of course but it has been described as a very life-like experience. We can’t help but think it would ruin the ambience, but each to their own!

What’s the weirdest restaurant you’ve ever been to?
