There has been a temporary reduction to the maximum speed limit on motorways in Spain from 120kph to 110kph. This speed limit cut in Spain came into force on the 7th March in a bid to reduce imports of petrol 5% per year.

Many Spaniards are furious about this change in the law, stating that it won’t make any difference, and many have vowed to drive at the same speed as before. Fines for exceeding the speed limit range from €100 to €600, with drivers facing points on their licence and possibly even a day in court.

Over 6,100 110kph stickers have been plastered over the current 120kph signs along the motorway already, which will be up until 30th June. The Spanish government will review the situation in the energy market again before deciding whether to extend the reduced limit.

Those who have booked car hire in Spain and are due to travel before 30th June 2011 will have to adhere to the reduced speed limit on motorways also.
