Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City is the state’s capital and its largest urban area. Situated in the heart of Oklahoma it is a great place to stay whilst you are exploring the rest of the state. There is plenty to do in the city though, including some fantastic shops and restaurants alongside some fantastic attractions.
You can visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum to get a flavour of how life was as an outlaw, or view some of the brilliant artwork depicting the period. If you want some more Cowboy themed entertainment then head to Frontier City, a Western themed amusement park, where you can see re-enacted gunfights and test your courage on some of the rollercoasters.
Away from the historically themed attractions, you can visit other interesting museums. The Science Museum Oklahoma and the Museum of Osteology are particular favourites and they both have some really engaging exhibits. Outside of the city there are plenty of places to visit in your hire car, such as the City Zoo and Botanical Gardens. This is a great place to spend a day discovering the various animals and birds on show, whilst spending some time in the beautiful gardens.
Tulsa
Tulsa is a city on the eastern edge of Oklahoma. It is famous for its brilliant museums, excellent arts scene and an extensive amount of parkland. Perhaps the most famous museum in the city is the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium. Here you can see a range of aircraft from jet fighters to helicopters and even space shuttles.
Whilst you are in Tulsa make sure you visit the iconic Golden Driller. This 75 foot tall statue of an oil worker is not to be missed and there are some brilliant photo opportunities. You can also spend some time outside of the city in the Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area. If you enjoy great scenery and time spent in the open air then this is the place for you.
If you are a fan of sports and the outdoors then why not head to the Southern Hills Country Club for a round of golf? You can enjoy the many facilities on offer here and then grab some excellent food in the restaurant. Alternatively, you could spend some time by the Arkansas River to the south of the city, where there are 20 miles of great trails along the riverside. Make sure you take a picnic and enjoy a day exploring outdoors.
