A relatively small island, Madeira is primarily served by the main airport; Funchal Airport. Due to its popularity, it is often referred to simply as Madeira Airport. Its proximity to the capital Funchal naturally makes it a very convenient choice for tourists and is close to the Tropical Palace Gardens, Botanical Gardens and the famous cable car to Monte.
There is also the small neighbouring island, Porto Santo, which is just a short ferry trip from the mainland. You may opt to fly into Porto Santo Airport on the north east side of the island, hire a car and explore the surrounding areas. You could also plan a day trip or two on Madeira itself.
Whichever airport you land at, there is plenty waiting to be discovered across this beautiful island, affectionately nicknamed the 'Floating Garden of the Atlantic'.
There's a wide variety of exciting things to see and do on this famous volcanic island, from natural sights to city fun! Venture to Ribeiro Frio located on the edge of the aptly named Riberio Frio Natural Park. This is a great place in which to enjoy the natural surroundings with wonderful views at every turn and plenty of fresh air.
Journey to Porto Moniz on the northwest coast of the island. The area is famed for its natural, salt water filled lava rock pools, which are wonderful for swimming. In good weather it gets quite busy as it's a popular choice for families but there are changing rooms, lockers, and even lifeguards here as well as a snack bar. Afterwards, why not visit the aquarium to see some of the local species of fish up close.
Located north of Funchal, the Caves of Sao Vicente make a really popular and interesting day out and are easy to reach with your own transport. Enjoy a tour of these fantastic volcanic caves and lava tubes and learn all about the mammoth eruption 400,000 years ago which resulted in the birth of the island. It's an interesting option for adults and children alike.
