Porto Santo is an island located to the north-east of Madeira.
Exploring Vila Baleira
The capital of the island and a hive of activity when the weekend comes round, if you are looking to spend time in a lively town, then this should suit you. Home to a fabulous beach, you can top up your tan here. Once the evening rolls around, the central square named Largo do Pelourinho and Infante Gardens are the place to be.
Sightseeing on Porto Santo
For a taste of the wondrous views that this island has to offer, why not travel to Portela? Marvel at the windmills here and the local church.
Drive further along the coast and you will reach Pico do Facho. This is the highest point on the island, and to scale this you will have to embark on foot. The reward comes when you finally get to the top! Explore more of the northeast of the island, characterised by its cliffs and rocky ledges. Traverse along some of its many peaks including Pico do Castelo and Pico da Juliana.
Journey a little more inland on the east side of the island and see the serras. There is a road that you can take that will tour around this clay landscape, and you could try the challenge of walking up Pico Branco if you wish.
If you enjoy a round or two of golf, Porto Santo Golf Course is a demanding course stretched across a variety of landscapes. Located to the west of the island, there is both a north and south course offering differing styles to cater for all visitors.
