What is There to Do in & Around Merida?
The centro historico is home to the wondrous Plaza Grande, the hub of activity here. Stroll to the Cathedral de San Ildefonso, and marvel at the architecture which was put together with stones from Mayan ruins in the 16th Century. Try to arrange a tour around City Hall whilst you are here too.
As Merida itself is slightly inland, if you are craving some sunshine, a trip to Progreso should be on the menu. Wander along the marina, and laze on the beach for a while. Due to the fact that it is a port, the seafood is divine and should be tried.
What About Further Afield?
Named as one of Mexicos Pueblos Magicos, which translates as Magic Towns, make sure that you visit Izamal where everything has been painted yellow, hence its nickname, the Yellow City. The local shops are brimming with art and craft gifts including jewellery if you are looking for an unusual present.
The Celestun Special Biosphere Reserve is approximately 2 hours’ drive away from the centre of Merida and easily reached if you have picked up a hire car in Merida or the airport. Whilst flamingos tend to be the main attraction, you will also see many other bird species and reptiles.
A visit to Chichen Itza is of course not to be missed. Whether you decide to take a self-drive trip with your rental car from Merida or simply hop on board a pre-arranged excursion, this wide variety of Mayan ruins is truly spectacular.
Both Playa del Carmen and Cancun are on the opposite side of the Yucatan state and present some great snorkelling and diving opportunities. There are numerous coral reefs along this stretch of coastline, all of which will take your breath away.
