Things to See and Do in Shannon
Enjoy a round or two at Shannon Golf Club. Take the children to Atlantic AirVenture where they can learn about aviation and even have a go in a flight simulator.
Bunratty Castle is one of the main attractions in the area, so a visit is a must. Filled with medieval furnishings and artworks, it is a fantastic example of 15th Century architecture. The Folk Gardens are also great for a stroll.
Hire a car and visit some of the attractions on offer in Limerick. Try the Hunt Museum which houses art antiques from the Neolithic to the 20th Century. You could also visit St Mary’s Cathedral, the Treaty Stone and Arther’s Quay Park. Explore King John’s Castle in the heart of the city’s medieval district or trace Frank McCourt’s footsteps on an Angela’s Ashes walking tour.
Take a drive to the nearby town of Ennis; wander through the quaint streets and peek in the array of shops, take a tour at the Crystal Factory and visit the Clare Museum. Stop at the large Cathedral at the southern end of O'Connell St; its spire is a useful landmark from afar.
Day Trips From Shannon
Take a boat trip and spend some time in Sligo Bay. You can take a tour which will enable you to visit Coney Island, The Donegal Wreck, Rosses Point and Oyster Island lighthouse, amongst many more.
Head to Mullingar where you may want to visit Belvedere House and Gardens. Tour the factory floor of Mullingar Pewter Visitor Centre, or visit Rockfield Ecological Estate. It is a secluded organic farm which is set around a beautiful Georgian House and runs craft courses and arts events as well as farm tours.
Doneraile Wildlife Park is easily reached when you hire a car here. Grab your hiking boots and amble around the wondrous countryside. Maybe you'll even spot a deer or two! Doneraile Court is situated here so you can marvel at this imposing building.
Journey to Cork and discover the city. Find St. Anne's Church and have a go at ringing the Shannon Bells yourself. The impressive St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and English Market are also worth visiting. You simply can’t miss a trip to Blarney Castle, home to the Blarney Stone, either.
Explore Waterford, the oldest city in Ireland. Wander through the Viking Quarter and uncover the delights of the Waterford Museum of Treasures. Drive along the coast and find your favourite spot on the Copper Coast Geopark during your visit.
Close to the city of Galway are the Cliffs of Moher; soak up the breathtaking views. If you have the kids in tow, attractions such as the nearby Aquarium or Brigit's Garden can provide plenty of entertainment too.Book now
