You will find the town of Siracusa located on the south east coast of Sicily, just 50 minutes by car from Catania Airport.
Unearth the History of Siracusa
Siracusa is known locally as Syracuse. As with much of Sicily, there is a lot of Greek history to be found here. The city itself has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in fact. The Necropolis of Pantalica is cited to be the highlight of this.
Spend some time visiting the plethora of historical buildings and monuments here. There are several churches as well as the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Apollo and the Roman Amphitheatre. Wander to the cathedral and soak up the wondrous architecture.
Other Nearby Towns
Take a trip to the town of Gela. Visit a selection of interesting sights such as the archaeological museum, the cathedral and even the local lake and nature reserve.
Travel to Augusta which is just a short car journey away. It has an interesting harbour to visit and Castello Svevo, a fortress which dates back to the early 1200s.
Why not spend some time in Catania? Not only is there a cathedral, you will also find numerous piazzas to wander around coupled with markets and other ancient sites to unearth.
If you want to head out of the town slightly then try and find the road to Riserva Naturale Cavagrande del Cassibile. Explore on foot following a short trail then take a swim at the end.
Vendicari Nature Reserve is also a wondrous wetland to explore. There are some breathtaking beaches located here that are perfect for an afternoon of relaxation. Three routes have been marked out to allow to you enjoy the untouched landscape. There are also plenty of rocky areas which are great for snorkelling.
