Take a stroll along the golden mile, named for the golden sand beaches that line the city’s coastal edge. Extending from Blue Lagoon South to Durban Harbour, you can take detours out onto the piers to watch surfers, kite boarders, and sandcastle architects hone their skills. Head out first thing in the morning and make the most of the view of the horizon with a breakfast pastry and a coffee.
For a cultural experience, visit the Indian quarter of the city for a delicious spiced meal and to visit the Hare Krishna Temple of Understanding. There are also tranquil gardens to explore and the area is easily reached by car.
Amble around the beachfront market which sells an array of crafts and artwork and then head to the market on Victoria Street to stock up on delicious food for a picnic.
Day Trips From Durban
Visit Crocodile Creek in the town of Tongaat. The creek is home to 7,000 crocodiles, alligators, caiman, snakes, and other reptiles and you can enjoy a guided tour. The whole experience makes a great day out.

At Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve you can explore more of South Africa’s pretty landscape and natural beauty on foot. Take the heritage trail which starts with a boardwalk that hugs the shoreline before descending into stunning coastal forest. Look out for vervet monkeys, and see how many different types of butterflies and birds you can spot.
