Things to See in Portimao
Portimao is surrounded by three nature reserves, so be sure to explore them all. Ria Formosa Natural Park and Ria de Alvor are highlights, both of which contain a mixture of salt marshes, lagoons and sand dunes providing a home for a variety of flora and fauna. Relax on the gorgeous beaches, interspersed with wondrous rock formations and caves, which can be discovered by boat.
For those that fancy a spot of retail therapy why not hit the shops? The town centre is jam-packed full of shops, offering a wide choice of clothes, gifts, and souvenirs. There are also plenty of bars, restaurants and café’s where you can sit for a bite to eat or a drink and watch the town carry on around you. Alternatively, for a more relaxing break after a busy afternoon of shopping, wander along the Marina and gaze at the array of colours that make this area truly special.
Exploring Portimao by Car
Why not journey to nearby Praia da Rocha and laze on the beautiful white sand? Despite being popular, especially in the height of summer, the size of the beach means it never feels crowded. Explore the old fort at the eastern end of the beach and climb the tower for fantastic views along this pretty stretch of coastline.
For the sporting enthusiasts nearby, Lagos is home to one of the most celebrated golf courses in Portugal.
