Unlock the real Spain

Spain is famous for its vibrant cultural cities, golden sun-drenched beaches, and world-class culinary heritage, making it an extraordinary destination for a driving holiday.

A scenic drive along the Mediterranean coast connects lively hubs like Barcelona, Valencia, and Málaga, tracing routes that run alongside gorgeous coastal waters.

Navigating these beautiful paths opens up access to quiet historic white-walled villages, remote clifftop fortresses, and pristine sandy coves that regular public transport options cannot easily reach.

Further inland, a rental vehicle gives you the complete freedom to explore the country's diverse and vast geography at your own comfortable pace.

You can journey through the historic plains of Castile, weave along the sweeping olive groves of Andalusia, or climb the dramatic, winding mountain roads of the Picos de Europa range.

Having complete control over your travel itinerary allows you to stop at rural roadside fruit stalls, explore quiet national park trails, and discover family-run countryside taverns completely free from rigid group tour schedules.

Can I take my rental car across national borders?

Given Spain's position on the Iberian Peninsula, many travelers want to extend their road trip across borders into neighboring destinations like Andorra, France, Gibraltar, or Portugal.

Please be aware that each provider enforces completely individual regulations regarding border crossings.

To check what options are available for your journey, we recommend generating a live quote on our website where eligible cars will be explicitly labeled with exact permissions or local fees.

Our Fleet in Spain

At Zest Car Rental, we offer a wide range of vehicles in Spain to suit every type of traveller. Fuel-efficient economy cars and nimble compact models are highly practical for navigating narrow historic town lanes, maneuvering through old city quarters, and finding parking spaces in busy urban hubs like Madrid or Barcelona.

If you plan to tour the steep mountain climbs of the interior, carry substantial holiday luggage, or cruise regional highways with family, choosing a spacious intermediate vehicle or a compact SUV can provide additional power, ground clearance, and reliable interior comfort for the terrain.

One Way Rentals in Spain

In Spain, you can pick up your car and drop it off at a different location, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

One-way rentals are perfect for linear road trips, cross-country travel, or flexible itineraries, such as collecting your vehicle at Madrid Barajas Airport and returning it at Málaga Airport.

Please note that each provider sets their own rules for one-way rentals, and some may apply a mandatory local fee. This is clearly shown during the booking process.

Driver Age Requirements in Spain

Can I rent a car in Spain if I am under 25?
Yes. However, many providers apply a Young Driver Surcharge and may restrict access to luxury vehicle categories. Young driver fees vary by provider and may still apply depending on age and vehicle category.

Can I rent a car in Spain if I am over 70?
Yes. While some providers may have additional requirements or conditions for older drivers depending on policy, others welcome senior drivers with zero restrictions or extra costs.

What is the best time of year to explore Spain by car?

The ideal time to explore Spain on a driving holiday is during the spring months of April to June or the autumn months of September to October.

During these periods, you can enjoy beautifully mild, sunny temperatures and highly comfortable driving conditions across both the coastal routes and inland highways while avoiding peak mid-summer heat and crowds.

Essential Tips for Driving in Spain

Driving in Spain is conducted on the right-hand side of the road, with overtaking executed on the left. Spain has a mixed road charging system. Most motorways (autovías) are free, but some private or concession-operated motorways (autopistas) still require tolls, especially on certain coastal and intercity routes. Toll collection is mostly electronic or barrier-based, depending on the concession. Payment can be made by card or cash at toll booths, and some sections support electronic toll tags. In addition, Spain also uses urban low-emission or congestion charging schemes in certain cities (separate from motorway tolls).

A V-16 connected emergency beacon is mandatory for all vehicles, including rental cars, to signal a breakdown or accident. You do not need to rent or buy one separately; by Spanish law, your rental company is required to provide it as standard safety equipment, usually stored in the glove compartment.

Drink-driving is prohibited under Spanish law and punishments are strict. If you plan to drink, you should not drive.

When navigating major urban areas like Madrid or Barcelona, remain alert for exceptionally dense city traffic, rapid lane shifts, and complex multi-tiered highway interchanges. Parking options in central municipal districts are strictly regulated, with availability varying by location and commonly featuring blue or green pay-and-display zones managed by meters or regional apps.

Outside the main cities, look out for sudden speed limit drops near rural villages, slow-moving agricultural vehicles, and steep mountainous terrain with tight turns across rugged interior ranges.
