If you are arriving at Bilbao Airport, then no doubt you are looking to enjoy some time in the north of Spain.
Having landed at Bilbao Airport, it is likely that this will be your starting point. Pick up your hire car and head into Bilbao. The Old Town is rather beautiful and packed full of delights including the city’s gothic cathedral. Once you have finished here, a stroll along the Rio Nervion is in order. Why not also head to the twisted iron clad exterior of the Guggenheim Museum? For a traditional visit, try the Bullfighting Museum or the Maritime Museum too.
Beaches in the Basque Country
Enjoy some time soaking up the sunshine on one of the many beaches across the northern coast of Spain. The most well-known beach near Bilbao is Playa de Bakio, but if you are looking to try some water sports and marvel at the wondrous scenery, then perhaps Playa de Azkorri is better suited.
La Concha Beach in San Sebastian is city based, but still absolutely stunning. If you are looking to sample some local cuisine too, enjoy some Pintxos.
If you like to intersperse your beach trip with a little bit of geology, then Itzurun Beach is for you.
Vineyards near Bilbao
You can put your hire car to good use and embark on a tour of the vineyards across this area of northern Spain. The area’s most popular wine is Txacoli which is produced in three areas in this region Álava, Getaria and Vizcaya. If you wish to embark on guided tours of the wineries, it is advisable to plan your route and book in advance.
Bombed during WWII, the history of Guernica is fascinating. View the Monument to Peace which was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombings. There are also two stunning churches to view including the Parish Church of Santa María and the Church of Santa María de la Antigua.
