If you’re after ancient history, you can choose between Stonehenge, Hadrian’s Wall, Arbor Low, and Castlerigg for starters before moving into the medieval period with visits to numerous castles and stately homes.
North England
Packed full of bustling cities such as Newcastle, Leeds, and York, the North of England is typified by the combination of wondrous landscapes and fantastic urban areas. Visit Manchester and explore the UK’s 2nd largest city. Whilst in the North, the Roman fortification of Hadrian’s Wall is definitely worth a visit. There are several spots where you can discover more about this historical wonder. The sheer beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park alongside the fabulous Lake District are both great for hikers, bikers, and those who love the great outdoors. If you do visit York, the Minster is certainly a highlight of this historic city with its magnificent Rose window and panoramic views from the top of the tower.
Midlands
The Midlands are perfect for those who want to balance activities to keep the kids entertained with visiting some of the most breath-taking scenic spots in the country. Drive to Leicester and visit the new tomb of Richard III in the Cathedral. Cadburys World will suit anyone who wants to see the story behind their favourite chocolate bar whilst Alton Towers is a great attraction for thrill seekers. Full of exhilarating rides for all ages, there is even a spa if you crave some relaxation instead.
For the outdoor types, the Peak District and Cotswolds are on your doorstep. Pick up a car in Sheffield and explore Kinder Scout National Park in the Peak District or amble along the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. If you have a keen interest in motorsport then the Silverstone Circuit is also in the area. Whether you enjoy Formula 1 or MotoGP, these events and plenty more should pique your interest.
South West
The South West of England offers visitors hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline, striking moorland, and wonderful cities. Plymouth is an excellent starting point to explore this beautiful part of the country. Stroll round the historic Barbican waterfront, visit the Blackfriars Distillery, and see where the Mayflower set sail from. Be sure to visit the Eden Project in Cornwall and its stunning biomes. This eco project presents a vast array of gardens and educational exhibits to enjoy, a must whilst you are in this area. The cities of Exeter, Bath, and Bristol really pack a historical punch and should delight all who visit.
South East
The most famous location in south east England is undoubtedly London. Home to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Wembley, and so much more, any length of trip is well worth while. If you collect your car in London there are numerous places all within a reasonable driving distance for you to visit. Depending on what you’re after, Legoland is great for the kids whilst Windsor Castle presents a great day out for families and adults. If you’d rather, head to Brighton and explore the south coast, Seven Sisters Cliffs, and Brighton Pier.
Alternatively, collect a vehicle in Oxford and you’re in a great location to explore much of the UK. Take a tour of the city’s historic colleges and famous spires. When you’re done, why not stop for a pint at one of Inspector Morse’s favourite pubs? Another must see is Blenheim Palace, half an hour’s drive from Oxford. The birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, Blenheim attracts over half a million tourist a year and is one of Britain’s most breath-taking buildings.
East & East Anglia
Explore the university city of Cambridge and its stunning architecture such as King’s College and the Bridge of Sighs. If you want to take in the sights from the water, head down to the river and take a punt trip along the Backs. Visit the nearby city of Ely with its famous cathedral which dates from 1083.
Norfolk is not only home to the Sandringham Estate, it also has a gorgeous coastline and the Norfolk Broads which is home to a variety of rare birds, flora, and fauna. If in Norwich, be sure to visit the cloisters at Norwich Cathedral or visit the stunning church of St Peter Mancroft.
