Derby’s Cathedral Quarter is a great place to start getting to know the city. It is full of independent shops and restaurants and it’s also the historic heart of Derby. Its old streets are full of character and they’re a great place to explore. There are numerous guided tours available that can give you more detail on the area, including a famous ghost walk.
If you want a more contemporary shopping experience then make sure you head to Westfield Derby. You will find everything and anything in the giant shopping centre, and you can get a bite to eat while you are there.
Whilst in Derby you must also make time to visit the cathedral, which has the one of the highest towers in the UK. The inside is incredibly light and is a great place to explore if you are interested in religious buildings and architecture. Also make time to visit The Market Hall to find a bargain and take a real ale tour to discover the finest ales in Derby’s hidden pubs.
Within an hour’s drive of Derby’s city centre are a variety of great day trips that are suitable for everyone. For example, you can reach Chatsworth House in a hire car in less than 60 minutes. Discover this stately home which is set in the incredible Peak District. The house and grounds are both open to visitors and after you have explored them you can get some food from one of the incredible restaurants.
If you like fun-filled adventures then make sure that you visit Alton Towers. The theme park is only a short drive to the west of the city and is a must for all families. Test your nerve on the numerous white-knuckle rollercoasters before seeing a show in 4D and visiting the water park.
Another family attraction within easy reach of Derby is Conkers, in the National Forest. There are a mix of indoor and outdoor activities which means that you can enjoy yourself whatever the weather. You and your family will be engaged for hours with the activity centre, various outdoor exploits, such as pond dipping and kayaking, and over 120 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens.
The Heights of Abraham is the oldest attraction in the Peak District and it’s still going strong. The cable car ride in itself is worth the journey as you get amazing views of the surrounding landscapes. Once at the top of the cable car there is still plenty to see and do. You can explore the caverns, head on a woodland walk, or visit the picnic and adventure playground areas.Book now
