The island of La Gomera is modestly sized but certainly packs a punch. This makes it an extremely popular destination year round for travellers of all ages. When you arrive it will be at the island’s main airport which is located at the south of the island. With much of the island dominated by La Garajonay National Park, unspoilt terrain is one of the overwhelming draws of La Gomera. For this reason alone you should hire a car so you can quickly start your adventure. Unearth deep ravines and scale mountain heights.
What are the Best Things to See and Do in La Gomera
Located a 45 minute drive away from the airport, through the twists and turns of the mountains, lies the island’s capital, San Sebastian de la Gomera. Wander around the lovely historic centre which boasts plenty to see and do before stopping for a drink and a bite to eat near the attractive harbour. You’ll soon learn that Christopher Columbus also visited the town on his quest to the New World!
One of the best things about visiting an island such as La Gomera on holiday is of course the proximity to the sea. As well as relaxing and enjoying beach activities like swimming, sunbathing and a multitude of sports, you can take the water itself. Why not go on a whale watching tour? There are many different excursions to choose from and not only will you meet whales, but dolphins too!
Getting Around La Gomera with a Hire Car
This island is small enough to be discovered in the truest sense of the word. To do so properly though, and uncover the nooks and crannies, you will need your own form of transport!
Once you’ve picked up your rental car, start planning a trip to La Garajonay National Park, undoubtedly La Gomera’s crowning jewel. This area is blanketed by the evergreen Laurisilva forest and is marked as a world heritage site. This makes it perfect for walking and hiking, so park up and get stuck in!
Visit the beautiful valley where Valle Gran Rey is nestled. The landscape is littered with palm trees and stunning gardens, making this a fantastic place to explore. An easy day trip, it is an hour’s drive from the airport with your hire car taking you on a trip through the beautiful interior of the island. The journey will likely take longer though, when you factor in the many stops to enjoy the view!
Laze on some of La Gomera’s stunning beaches such as Playa de Ingles, Playa de Santiago, and Playa de la Caleta. As it’s a volcanic island, you won’t find golden sand but they are certainly striking areas in which to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather!
