There aren't many whitewashed buildings here but the island has a wonderful atmosphere and you are sure to have a great time during your visit.
It is very much a touristic destination, with plenty of busy resorts lining the shores but there are some quieter areas thrown in for good measure too. It is well worth arranging a hire car in Skiathos so you can zoom about and create a unique itinerary. Collect your car from Skiathos Airport or the town centre if this is easier for you; the choice is yours.
Why Holiday on Skiathos?
As mentioned above, the islands landscape is somewhat different to the majority of Greek Islands. There's plenty to see and do though and a great place to start is in Skiathos Town. Plazas and pretty gardens are frequent sights and there are numerous cafes, tavernas, and antique shops to wander around. For a real look at the history of the island however, ensure you head to Kastro, the ancient city which dates from the 12th Century.
Day Trips on Skiathos
Hire a car at Skiathos Airport and visit up to 60 beaches; each of them perfect for a dose of sun, sea, sand, and great nightlife. Vromolimnos, approximately 8km south of Skiathos, is a very popular beach and caters well for tourists making it an ideal choice for a day trip out. The lush green backdrop provides shade and creates a great atmosphere in which to relax.
Alternatively arrange car rental in Skiathos Town and take a drive to Banana Beach, about 13km away from Skiathos, its name hailing from the crescent shaped cove. Not only is it beautiful, it's great for water sports too, allowing for a more exciting day out than your usual seaside experience.
Why not inject a bit of culture into your holiday too with a visit to the Monastery of Moni Evangelistria? It's located about 8km away from Skiathos. Poised 450m above a gorge, it is certainly impressive and makes for an interesting addition to your trip.
Consider catching a boat to Lalaria from Skiathos, where you can see a fantastic area of caves and wild rocks. It's truly breathtaking and only accessible by the sea!
